Research and Development in Biotech Industry

您的工作的哪一个方面最吸引您？

我在一家生物技术公司的研究和开发部门担任高级研究员。在工作中，我最喜欢的方面是不断地学习新事物。工作和学术界不同，在industry，我可以学习研究不同的疾病，而不只是一直在关注同一个问题。

My job is a senior scientist in the research and development of a biotechnology company. The aspect of my job that I enjoy the most is that I’m constantly learning new things. Unlike in academia in which I might be learning about the same issue for years, I get to learn about different diseases in my career.

生物医药领域有哪些热门话题？

我想到的第一个技术是CRISPR，它允许我们编辑细胞。这项技术被广泛用于细胞疗法。另一项技术是分子胶水。在这项技术之前，调控不是酶的蛋白质是非常困难的。但现在我们可以通过E3连接酶，运用细胞的回收系统来调控非酶蛋白质。Alphafold，谷歌设计蛋白质序列的人工智能，也是值得注意的事情。

The first thing that came into my mind is CRISPR, which allows us to edit cells. This technology is widely used in cell therapy because we can edit the cells before we give it to patients.

Another technology is molecular glue. It is very hard to target proteins that are not enzymes. However, through E3 ligase, we can use the cell recycling systems to inhibit or facilitate proteins that are not enzymes.

Alphafold, the Google AI for designing protein sequences, is also something to notice.

如何寻找入门级工作机会？

在UCLA，很多同学都可以在本科阶段获得实验室经验。大家可以通过这样的经历对基础的实验操作和学术交流氛围有一些了解。如果想对工业界有更多的了解，可以考虑一些大型制药公司的实习项目，如Amgen Scholars Program。

针对于入门级工作而言，你可以从研究助理开始。研究助理一般会与高级研究员一起进行推进研究项目，但会具体承担很多具体的实验执行工作。

In UCLA, you can get lab experience as an undergraduate. If you want more insight into the biotechnology industry, you can consider some internship programs in large pharma companies, like the Amgen Scholars Program.

In terms of an entry-level job, you can start as a research associate, whose main role is to physically be inside a lab to conduct research. Research associates work with senior scientists on research projects.
